Much like football linemen, Kim Iman and Catherine McCallum play their roles with little fanfare while those who score the points get most of the publicity.
While Cox High field hockey teammate Kim Miller's climb up the national scoring charts has been well documented, Iman's and McCallum's have not.
But there they are, right in the same pages of the National High School Sports Record Book, sharing the limelight with Miller - the leading scorer in state history and third nationally.
Iman is second in high school history for career shutouts with 51. Her 13-game shutout streak from last year's state championship through the first 12 games of this season ranks third.
McCallum is currently tied for first in a season with 33 assists and ranks second for her career with 58.
Both will try to increase their numbers when the six-time defending Group AAA champion Falcons travel with Bayside to the state quarterfinals Friday at Oakton High in Vienna.
Bayside faces Northern Region champion Lake Braddock at 12:30 p.m., while Cox meets Northern runner-up South Lakes at 2:30 p.m.
Neither knew until just recently what they had accomplished.
``Wow! I had no idea,'' McCallum said. ``Kim has had to think about her numbers because of all the publicity, but you really don't think much about that stuff.
``We're such a team-oriented team that we all know what our roles are and that nobody would be doing what they were if it weren't for the rest of the team.''
It is a domino effect. Miller wouldn't score so many goals if McCallum wasn't so good at getting her the ball and McCallum couldn't pass to Miller if the midfield didn't control the ball. And Iman's records come in part because Cox spends so much of a game's 60 minutes trying to score on the other team's keeper.
``This team is so unbelievable,'' Iman said. ``They're incredible to watch and they protect me by being on offense so much. They've also helped make me prepared for anything because I face the best field hockey team's shots every day in practice.'' ILLUSTRATION: Photos
