OAKS AND BULLDOGS PUT 2 EACH ON FIRST SQUAD NORFOLK COLLEGIATE AND NORFOLK ACADEMY LED THE BALLOTING FOR THE TOP PLAYER HONORS.

NORFOLK COLLEGIATE and Norfolk Academy placed two players on the Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools boys soccer all-conference first team, as selected by the league's coaches.

The Oaks' Trey Cooper and Bobby Mitchell joined the Bulldogs' Dave Walker and Barrie Chang.

Also named to the first team was Peter Nichols of Norfolk Christian.

Cooper, the conference's second leading scorer during the regular season, scored 21 goals and added 15 assists, while Mitchell was fifth with 16 goals and nine assists. Cooper's seven points in the conference tournament gave him a single-season total of 64 and a career mark of 121, both records at Norfolk Collegiate.

Walker, a defender, and Chang were the mainstays of the Bulldog defense. Chang had 38 saves and recorded four shutouts in the regular season for Norfolk Academy.

Nichols, a senior, was the third-leading scorer in the league with 15 goals and 13 assists for 43 points.

The first team's leading vote-getter was Nansemond-Suffolk Academy's Gabe Valencia, who played an important role in Nansemond-Suffolk's major improvement over last year.

``The most I brought was some confidence,'' said Valencia, who is a member of the Richmond Capitals, an under-18 club soccer team. ``That's all they needed to get turned around. These guys can play - they just needed it brought out.''

The Saints, who won just one TCIS games last season, finished 6-2 in the conference this season and lost in the tournament championship 3-1 to Hampton Roads.

``The spark of confidence that Gabe gave them was something that they haven't had,'' first-year N-SA coach Tom Gill said. ``They looked up to him and he just took over. It spread through the whole team and once the players picked it up it made a huge difference.''

Other first team selections were: Sean Luoma of Cape Henry; Griff Behncke and Campbell Delk of Hampton Roads; Kory Juul of Walsingham; and Arthur Kelly of Peninsula Catholic.

Players from South Hampton Roads selected to the all-conference second team included: Joe Marconyak and Coy Davis of Catholic; Dennis Berndt of Norfolk Collegiate; Jon Lampton of Norfolk Academy; Brian Luoma of Cape Henry; and Ben Goins, Jay Habel and Jonathan Duman of Nansemond-Suffolk.

Catholic's Matt Ellinwood, Norfolk Christian's Matt Jones, Norfolk Collegiate's William Karangelen and Noah Stockton, and N-SA's Bryan Sharp received honorable mention. ILLUSTRATION: ALL-TIDEWATER CONFERENCE BOYS SOCCER TEAM
