A CITYWIDE DAY of Prayer will begin today at 8 p.m. and continue until 8 p.m. Friday.
Sponsored by the Suffolk Family YMCA and supported by more than 37 area churches, this event will bring together leading city officials, community service organizations, church leaders and community-minded citizens to pray collectively for God's guidance in returning the community to safety and peace.
Tonight's opening of the Day of Prayer, to be held in the sanctuary of Main Street United Methodist Church in downtown, will be led by former Gov. Mills E. Godwin Jr. Throughout the 24-hour observance, local pastors will offer petitions for various aspects of community life, including crime, poverty, spiritual awakening, city government, service organizations, the judicial system and schools.
The closing session, at 7:30 p.m. Friday, will be a joint Community Thanksgiving Service. It will open with contemporary music of the YMCA Community Chorus. The Rev. Alan R. Felumlee, pastor of Main Street UMC, will share texts from the Old and New Testaments.
During the congregational singing of ``We Gather Together,'' worshipers will light individual tapers, ``Candles of Peace,'' for a closing processional. At this time, a prayer for peace and justice within the city will be delivered by the Rev. Melvin Boone.
Free nursery care will be provided for children, in the Main Street Child Care facility, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall. MEMO: Main Street United Methodist Church is at 202 N. Main St. For more
