I'm disappointed that The Virginian-Pilot ignored both the opening of Photography Speaks II (curated by Brooks Johnson) at the Chrysler Museum and the death of Alice Frank, who was instrumental in the growth of the museum's photography collections.
With Mrs. Frank's assistance, the Chrysler became one of the nation's top photography salons, hosting not only important shows, but originating them under the very capable and knowledgeble care of Mr. Johnson.
Photography Speaks II opened Nov. 12, with preview on the evening of the 11th (only a few days after the death of Mrs. Frank). Highlighting more than 150 years of photography, this show serves to illustrate the evolution of this young art form.
The first Photography Speaks, which also originated at the Chrysler, led to a text now used by several prominent universities in their photography-history curriculum. Photography Speaks II is another extraordinary show.
The show will be open through March 31. An excellent companion book is available, and Mr. Johnson will be giving a free lecture on the exhibit on Nov. 19 at 1:30 p.m.
