Burning logs rolled out of a fireplace Wednesday and started a fire that heavily damaged a house while the occupants were away.
The blaze broke out about 2:45 p.m. in the 1100 block of Lassiter Lane.
The fire started in the family room and spread to the attic, said Lt. Jeff Messinger, spokesman for the Suffolk Fire Department. The rest of the house had heat and smoke damage.
Suffolk fire officials estimated damage at $50,000 to the one-story house owned by Gary Rodgers.
