YORK AND BRUNSWICK ADVANCE TO THE REGION I FINALS IN GIRLS BASKETBALL

York and Brunswick each earned a trip to Saturday's Region I girls basketball championship and to the Group AA state playoffs with wins over Lakeland and Nansemond River in Thursday's semifinals.

York came from behind to surprise Lakeland with a 54-50 overtime win and Brunswick held its lead despite a fourth-quarter Nansemond River surge for a 58-52 victory.

Down 36-27 going into the fourth quarter, York exploded for a 19-10 run and held Lakeland scoreless for four minutes.

Jen Harrell came up with a steal with 1:49 left to play in regulation and dished off to Nikesha Houston to pull Lakeland within a point. With 1:03 to go, Ashley Knoll tied it.

In overtime, York, which went on a 7-4 run, held Lakeland at bay, allowing the Falcons baskets at the 3:28 mark and with 59 seconds to play.

Rebecca Domiel led Lakeland with 16 points and Afryie Bray chipped in 10.

In the other game, Nansemond River, a victim of poor first-half free throw shooting, connected on just four of 20 tries and fell behind 26-20 at the halftime break.

Brunswick jumped to 48-36 lead with 5:37 to play in the fourth quarter before the Warriors attempted a comeback.

After trading buckets, Jannie Porter and Joycelyn Williams each hit both ends of one-and-one situations to pull Nansemond River within six.

But Brunswick was able to keep its lead by sinking four of seven free throws in the last minute.

Lakeisha Thompson paced Brunswick with 18 points and Melissa Harris chipped in 13.

Williams led the Warriors with 18 and Amy Patterson contributed 13. by CNB
