A weekend of art and literature will kick off the holidays in Portsmouth this weekend, beginning with a reading by Andrej Blatnik, a visiting writer from Slovenia.
The fiction writer will read from his short stories and then answer questions about his work and his country.
Blatnik, a member of the International Writers Association, is here through the International Writers Center at Old Dominion University.
The reading and a wine-tasting will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the courtyard of Prison Square. In case of inclement weather, the event will be moved inside Brutti's.
A block away the faculty of the Visual Arts Center of Tidewater Community College will hold an opening reception for the 26th annual Art Faculty Exhibition.
The exhibit in the art center's gallery spaces at 304 High St. will continue through Jan 14. Gallery hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and from 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays.
The center is closed Nov. 23-25 and Dec. 20-Jan. 1.
