Hyman Rubin, 106, of the 6400 block of Auburn Drive, died Nov. 17, 1995, in his residence.
Mr. Rubin was a native of Simbric, Latvia. He was preceded in death by Sydell Gross Rubin his wife of 72 years, and his oldest son Carl Morris Rubin an Army second lieutenant, who was killed in action in World War II.
He owned independent grocery stores in Norfolk from 1920 to 1960. His stores were first on Bank and Charlotte Street and later at the corner of 26th and Church Streets. Prior to this employment, Mr. Rubin was an apprentice watch maker in New York City, a farm worker near Staunton, Virginia, and a streetcar motorman in Norfolk. He was a member of Temple Israel in Norfolk.
Survivors include a son, Julius H. Rubin of Aiken, S.C.; one granddaughter, Mrs. Mary S. Cotter of Houston, Texas; three great-grandchildren; and a loving niece, Mrs. Ramona Brenner of Norfolk.
A graveside service will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Forest Lawn Cemetery by Rabbi Michael Panitz and Rabbi Aaron Baer. Memorial contributions may be made to the Beth Sholom Home of Eastern Virginia. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Norfolk Chapel, will be handling the arrangements.
