Six people will be inducted into the I.C. Norcom Athletic Hall of Fame at the ninth annual program to be held at 7 p.m. Nov. 25 at the JEM Banquet Facility.
Those to be inducted include the following:
Leroy Forbes, a retired banker, was a member of Norcom's first tennis team in the early 1950s and the first player to represent the school at local and state matches throughout the state. He was a team recipient of several plaques and trophies for national high school championships and was rated No. 9 in the country for high school players at that time.
Margaret Moody, now an optical technician in Charlotte, N.C., played basketball and tennis in the mid-1950s. She was captain of the basketball team in 1957 and won a Most Valuable Player in the state tournament that year.
Dwight Leon Fisher, a transportation monitor at Norfolk Naval Air Station, played football and baseball in the mid-1960s. He was co-captain and quarterback of the football team in 1964, the year the team won the Twin City Classic Trophy.
Herman Smith, now a security guard at Newport News Shipyard, played basketball in the mid-1960s. He was considered one of Norcom's great defensive players in basketball.
Andre Fields, now an aircraft mechanic at the Naval Air Station in Jacksonville, Fla., played football and ran track in the early 1980s. He won the Most Valuable Player Trophy for track and field in 1982, 1983 and 1984 and was selected the Portsmouth Sport's Club's Male Athlete of the Year in 1984.
In addition to the Norcom graduates, Bill Leffler, Portsmouth sports editor for The Virginian-Pilot, will be inducted in a special category for persons who have directly or indirectly supported the Norcom Athletic program and who have helped to develop student athletes.
Leffler was honored for years of covering student athletes and for ``following the team everywhere in the world,'' said executive committee member Phyllis Angus. by CNB
