DINNER, SHOW TO HELP FUND PERFORMING TROUPE'S TRIP

Chesapeake Pride, the performing troupe of Chesapeake high school volunteers, is planning a fund-raising dinner and show and a celebration of a couple recent performing successes.

A dinner theater event takes place today at Oscar F. Smith High School.

The group consists of 43 students from all five of Chesapeake's high schools. It stages music and dance productions espousing sober and responsible lifestyles.

The event is being held to help pay for the troupe's trip to the World Drug Conference in Cincinnati March 27-31, said Malia Piper, Pride administrative director and a career guidance counselor at Oscar F. Smith High School.

For a $5 donation, patrons will be able to dine on Hardee's fried chicken, coleslaw, macaroni salad and a beverage and take in the Pride show, highlighting what the group presents at its school and community performances.

Piper said besides the dinner theater, the event also will raise money for the Pride's spring Ohio trip through a bake sale, featuring food items baked by the Pride Parents Association.

The dinner show will feature several examples of the group's effective way of presenting positive lifestyle and behavioral choices for young people, Piper said.

Included in the show will be such song and dance numbers as the country flavored ``Got a Lot of Work To Do''; ``Building Bridges,'' which celebrates diversity and attempts to connect people of different races, economic and social and religious backgrounds; ``You Can Be,'' a new number in the Pride repertoire, featuring modern hip-hop-style street dancing and a show- stopping song performed by Great Bridge High School student Damien Smith; ``We Go Together'' from the Broadway musical and film ``Grease''; and ``Through My Eyes.''

Piper said the show also will include several comedy and dramatic sketches about alcohol and drug abuse, personal responsibility and making the right choices. by CNB
