BOWLING TOUR HITS NAVAL STATION WITH A PRO-AM EVENT ON FRIDAY

The Professional Bowlers Association regional tour will return to the Naval Station Lanes on Saturday and Sunday.

A pro-am on Friday will open the Southern Region competition.

Entry fee in the pro-am is $20 for adults. There will be a youth division with a $10 fee. Pro-am shifts will be at 4:30 p.m., 6:45 p.m. and 9 p.m.

The feature tourney is expected to draw between 100 and 125 pros. Non-members can enter for $185.

Sam Zurich of Melbourne, Fla., won last year and is expected to defend his title. Zurich edged Ken McNeely in the 1994 final, 237-226. Zurich won $3,000 and McNeeley earned $1,500.

Zurich also led the qualifying round. He fired an eight-game 1,829.

Seven local bowlers were among those who cashed last year. The top area finisher was Mike Terrell, who placed 16th and won $500.

Bowler of the Week honors are shared by Mike Longmore, who joined the coveted 300 Game Club, and Rich Finnigan, who has banged out another 12-striker for the third season in the past four years.

Longmore also earned Century Club honors with his perfecto in the Military Doubles Tenpin League at Pinboy's of Military. He averages 178.

The 300 came between games of 203 and 185 in a 688 series.

Finnigan had a 720 series in the Masters Tenpin League at Pinboy's of Lynnhaven.

Tenpin topics: Irene ``Sam'' Davis barely missed the 300 Club with a 297 in a 645 series in the Ladies Nite Out League at Pinboy's of Chesapeake. . . . Alan Smith joined the Century Club with his 269 game in the Monday Trio League at Pinboy's of Norfolk. Smith averages 159. . . . Ellis Ivy Jr. had a Dutch 200 in the Virginia Beach Eagles League at Pinboy's of Military. Bumm Beach slammed a 284 single in his 724 series in the Ball & Chain League at Indian River. . . . Mike Olenik whacked a 760 series in the Guys & Dolls League at Pinboy's of Military. . . . James Rodgers heaved a 289 game in the Londontown Mixed League at Pinboy's of Western Branch. . . . Rickie Winningham just fell short of the Century Club with a 244 single in the Military Doubles League at Pinboy's of Military. He averages 155. . . . Brad Schild popped a 276 game in a four-game 918 series in the Tuesday Scratch Trio League at Pinboy's at the Beach. . . . In-house qualifying commenced across the nation on Nov. 13 for the Miller $250,000 Doubles Challenge. There are more than 1,200 centers across the country and in Canada taking part. There will be $250,000 paid out in prizes, including $150,000 to those who reach the finals at Las Vegas. The winning twosome will get $20,000. . . . Competition is getting keen in pin manufacturing. Thirteen new brands have been approved for this season. . . . According to a recent national survey, the American Bowling Congress remains the largest sports membership organization in the country. It has a membership of 2,576,809. WIBC ranks 19th.

Duckpin data: A 178 game powered Lynette Narciso to a 477 series in the Tuesday Majors. . . . Della Stearns, who averages 87, racked up a 148 game in a 364 series in the Thursday Night Ladies League. . . . Shot of the week: a 7-10 split conversion by 8-year-old Brittney Weaser in the Victory Youth League. . . . Lanes newcomer Henry Smith, who averages 96, registered a 346 series in the Monday Morning Mixed League. . . . Reliable Trash Service captured the first round in the Industrial League. . . . Glenn Louder notched a 425 series in the Bowlarama Seniors League. . . . Kendra Allen continues to scorch 'em in the Monday Nite Ladies League, firing a 436 series with a 161 game. . . . Connie Insley, who tossed a 167 game last week in the Wednesday Morning Mixed League, came back with another 167 in the Suffolk Tuesday Nite Ladies League. . . . The Rev. Earl Freeland, a regular in the Sunday School League and the Mary Crabtree Singles League, has been sidelined by knee surgery. He's getting an artificial knee and hopes to return to action this season. . . . Jason McCready rolled a 154 game and Lee Hoggard had a 153 in the Victory Youth League. Eight-year-old Amy Ketchum, who averages 53, zipped 59 pins over with a 112. . . .
