Hollis David Sumter, of the 1100 block of East Indian River Road, departed this life on Nov. 17, 1995, at a hospital in Baltimore.
Mr. Sumter was born and educated in Sumter County, S.C., and was the son of the late James Eugene and Sara Myers. He was married to the late Sara R. Sumter. He was baptized at an early age and joined the Emanuel United Methodist Church in Sumter at the age of 14. He was a junior usher and very active in the church until moving to Norfolk in 1942. He has been a member of the St. Thomas A.M.E. Zion Church since 1943. He served his country as an Army sergeant in World War II and was honorably discharged in 1946. He then worked for the U.S. Government for 37 years at the Navy shipyards in Norfolk before retiring.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his daughter, Collette S. Brown; son-in-law, Conrad Brown; and granddaughter, Dominique G. Brown of Baltimore; his sister, Thelma S. Farmer of South Carolina; and a host of relatives and friends.
A funeral will be conducted at noon Wednesday in St. Thomas A.M.E. Zion Church by the Rev. G.L. Scott. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. The body will be placed in church at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Hale Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
