Elm Avenue in Norfolk officially became Evelyn T. Butts Avenue on

Saturday in honor of the community leader, who died in 1993. Above,

Anna Brinkley, sister of the late General District Judge Joe Jordan,

was one of the speakers. At left, Tuesday Fuller (on the ladder) and

Alicia Thornton unveil the new sign at the intersection with Avenue

E. Butts rose to prominence in 1966 when she was a plaintiff in a

U.S. Supreme Court case that resulted in the elimination of the

Virginia poll tax.
