PRIZES OFFERED FOR ORIGINAL MOTHER'S DAY CARDS

MOTHER'S DAY may still be six months away, but children who start working on their cards early - like now - have a chance to win mom a free trip to New York City or some hard cash.

Children in the fourth, fifth and sixth grades can enter their original Mother's Day cards in the All-American Salute to Mothers Greeting Card Contest.

The grand-prize winner will be printed by Carlton Cards and sold in retail stores nationwide for Mother's Day 1996.

The only catch is that you have to have the card finished and delivered by Dec. 8.

The contest is sponsored by Kentucky Fried Chicken and Family Circle magazine. More than 65,000 schools across the country are participating in the contest through an educational lesson plan focusing on mothers' evolving roles.

Children who enter can win one of the following prizes:

First-place winner receives $3,500 and a two-night trip with a parent or guardian to New York City for the unveiling of an exhibit of the top 51 cards.

Second-place winner receives $1,500.

Third-place winner receives $750.

Seven fourth-place winners receive $500.

To enter, students should make an original Mother's Day card with an illustration and written message. Any two-dimensional medium may be used, such as crayons, paint or marker. Contestants should avoid using media that are difficult to reproduce, such as chalk, pencil, notebook paper and three-dimensional objects like sparkles, beads and lace. Computer-generated art is ineligible. Cards must be constructed of paper folded in half and no larger than 5 3/8 inches wide by 8 1/4 inches high, with an illustration on the cover and message inside.

Each entry should include a separate sheet attached to the back of the card with the creator's name, school, grade, teacher's name, home address, parent's name and daytime telephone number, signed by a parent or legal guardian. Send the card to: KFC/Family Circle All-American Salute to Mothers, 332 S. Michigan Ave., Suite 900, Dept. DR., Chicago, IL 60604. Entries must be received by Dec. 8, 1995.

Winning cards will be chosen from each state. The top three cards will be published in the May 1996 issue of Family Circle.
