MAX MELTZER

Max Meltzer, 81, of the 5300 block of Marion Lane, died Nov. 29, 1995, in a Norfolk hospital.

Mr. Meltzer was a native of New York City and a resident of Norfolk since 1944. He was the son of the late Dora Bach and Louis Meltzer. He was a founding member of Temple Israel and a member of it's Mens Club, and held a membership in Congregation Beth El and it's Mens Club.

Mr. Meltzer enlisted in the U.S. Army and was a staff sergeant and a veteran of World War II. After his discharge from active duty he was proprietor of Riverside Market until 1964. He served as manager of the deli section of several Farm Fresh Stores until he retired in 1990.

He was a member of the Jewish War Veterans of Virginia and Florida, Jewish Community Center of Tidewater, Norfolk Seniors Center, the Round Table of Old Dominion University, Hadassah Associates of Florida, the Golden Age Club, Y.E.S. Club, and a member of Classic Care of DePaul Hospital.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Maxine Kanter Meltzer and a daughter, Andrea Meltzer of Virginia Beach; a sister, Rose Stein of Las Vegas, Nev.; a brother, Charles Meltzer of Silver Spring, Md.; and two brothers and sisters-in-law, Nancy and Eugene Kanter and Henrietta and Jack Kanter.

A chapel service will be conducted at 11 a.m., Wednesday at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk by Rabbi Arthur Ruberg and Cantor Jacob Tessler. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Damon Runyon-Walter Winchell Cancer Fund C/O 33 W. 56th Street, New York, N.Y. 10019, or Congregation Beth El or Temple Israel. The family will be at 284 Weller Blvd., Virginia Beach, following the funeral service. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk will be handling the arrangements.
