IF YOU WANTED FISH, THEY WERE EVERYWHERE FOR THE TAKING

Fishing was good all along the Dare coast over the weekend.

Kitty Hawk Pier reported good catches of speckled trout, some bluefish and a few puppy drum Saturday. Trout were also landed in good numbers throughout Saturday night. Scattered striped bass and speckled trout were landed Monday.

On Avalon Pier, anglers caught a few trout and small bluefish Saturday and Sunday. Fair numbers of keeper stripers were taken on bucktails and Rat L Traps Monday morning.

A few speckled trout and small blues were decked on Nags Head Pier during the weekend. Speckled trout and a couple of puppy drum were landed Monday. Additionally, a 14-pound striper was taken on a bucktail by Bernie Scanlon of Nags Head.

On Jennette's Pier, a few speckled trout were decked Saturday. Fishing improved Sunday afternoon with speckled trout up to 4 pounds, tailor blues and stripers weighing 12 and 13 pounds taken.

Outer Banks Pier fishermen landed some stripers before daylight early Saturday morning. Fishing was slow during the day Saturday and Sunday. A few small blues and a couple of speckled trout were taken Monday.

South of Oregon Inlet, Rodanthe Pier reported slow fishing Saturday. A few puppy drum and a 17-pound striper were landed Sunday. Muddy water Monday kept action at a minimum with only a few puppy drum taken.

Anglers on Avon Pier landed two 37-pound drum Friday night. Gray trout, speckled trout and sea mullet were taken Saturday. Two stripers and some sea mullet were caught Sunday. A 41-pound drum was decked Sunday night.

Frisco Pier reported slow fishing over the weekend except for early Saturday morning, when speckled trout were taken.

Speckled trout fishing was good in the surf north of Kitty Hawk Pier Saturday morning. Deep sloughs in other areas along the northern beaches were also very productive. A good run developed behind the Holiday Inn in Kill Devil Hills Saturday afternoon. Fish were landed on a wide variety of lures including Fin-S and TT mirrolures.

Trout action was good again at scattered locations Sunday morning, but increasing winds during the day curtailed action.

Plenty of striped bass were landed over the weekend from Corolla to Oregon Inlet. Fish were taken on just about every type of bait, both fresh and artificial. Action was particularly good around Oregon Inlet, where small-boat fishermen caught all the 10 to 20 pound stripers they wanted.

Lots of 2- to 4-pound speckled trout, a few puppy drum and stripers were taken along the beach from Oregon Inlet to Buxton Saturday. Fishing was just about the same during most of Sunday.

At Cape Point, trout fishing was good from the lighthouse to the Point late Friday and Friday night. Plenty of 15- to 18-pound stripers were landed at the Point Saturday and Saturday night. On Sunday some stripers, scattered speckled trout, a few albacore and a 9-pound black drum were beached.

Surfcasters from Frisco to Hatteras Inlet landed speckled trout, blues, black drum, a few puppy drum and some nice-size gray trout over the weekend.

Tuna fishing was good near the ``point'' Saturday. Charter craft out of Oregon Inlet fishing center and Pirate's Cove landed yellowfins weighing up to 60 pounds and scattered Big Eye tuna in the 150-pound class. On Sunday, fishing slowed with scattered tuna, a few kings and a couple of wahoo taken. Fishing rebounded Monday with excellent catches of yellowfin tuna reported.

Hatteras charters reported plenty of king mackerel and a few blackfin tuna taken north of Diamond Shoals light tower Saturday. Three jumbo bluefin tuna were released by the Big Eye.

King mackerel fishing was good again Sunday. Some nice-size yellowfins were also landed east of the Diamond Shoals tower.

Striped-bass fishing in local sounds should be excellent over the next couple weeks. During the season that opens Wednesday, anglers will be allowed to possess two stripers no less than 21 inches long. During the open season, stripers may be taken by hook and line only on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays.

The water temperature at the Corps of Engineer's Pier in Duck was 55 degrees Monday. by CNB
