FISHERMEN GIVE THANKS FOR DAY'S FINE HAUL

Several piers along the northern beaches reported good fishing Tuesday morning.

Anglers on Kitty Hawk Pier caught good numbers of 2- to 4-pound speckled trout early in the day. Action during the afternoon was slow.

Fishermen on Avalon Pier also landed quite a few trout weighing as much as 4 pounds, a few 30-inch striped bass and some bluefish during the morning.

Lots of 3- to 5-pound trout were taken on white bucktails from Nags Head Pier before noon. A few tailor blues and one puppy drum also were landed.

Jennette's Pier reported a slow day.

Speckled trout were landed from Outer Banks Pier early Tuesday Morning. Some small bluefish and scattered black drum, including one 41/2 pounder, were landed later in the day.

South of Oregon Inlet, anglers on Rodanthe Pier caught some small croaker and black drum. One drum weighed 8 pounds.

Sea mullet fishing was good Monday night on Avon Pier. Sea mullet, black drum and croaker were landed Tuesday.

Medium-sized speckled trout and 1-pound sea mullet were caught by Frisco Pier fishermen.

Surf fishing was slow overall from Corolla to Oregon Inlet, although some scattered striped bass and a few puppy drum were taken.

A few stripers were landed from the beach around Oregon Inlet. Good catches were made from boats in the area.

Black drum and small bottom fish were taken by surfcasters from Rodanthe to Buxton. A 30-pound drum was beached at Ramp 23.

Stripers were landed Monday night at Cape Point. Some speckled trout were taken from the surf near the lighthouse Tuesday morning. A 37-pound drum was caught and released by David Shockley of Moorestown, N.J., and a jumbo 10-pound, 5-ounce flounder was landed by Al Mury Tuesday.

Small bluefish and some sea mullet were taken by surf fishermen in the Frisco area.

Sixty-pound yellowfin tuna were plentiful northeast of Oregon Inlet Tuesday. Most charter craft returned home early after catching their limits.

Charters operating off Hatteras landed fair catches of king mackerel. Jumbo bluefin tuna also were reported in the area in fair numbers.

Striped bass should provide plenty of action in the surf for fishermen along the Dare coast in the coming weeks.

Al Holmstrup, 37, bagged a striped bass on the oceanfront Tuesday.

Bass fishing in the sound opens at 12:01 a.m. Friday.
