Elizabeth W. Powell

NORFOLK - Elizabeth Williams Powell, of the 5600 block of Tidewater Drive and formerly of the Riverview area of Norfolk, expired on Nov. 20, 1995, in Lafayette Villa.

Mrs. Powell was born in Pasquotank County, N.C., and had resided in Norfolk for 65 years. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Alton Brooks Powell. She was a dedicated member and former deaconess of the First Christian Church (Disciples) and the Adelphians Bible Class for more than 60 years. Mrs. Powell was an accomplished seamstress and homemaker.

She is survived by three daughters, Margaret E. Powers and her husband, Robert, of Norfolk, Mary P. Doxey and her husband, Burnley, of Newport News, and Miriam A. Riggs of Plattesville, Wis.; three sisters, Margaret Barbee of Columbus, Ohio, Irene Pittman of Norfolk, and Evelyn Clary of South Hill, Va.; and one brother, Franklin Nixon Williams of South Mills, N.C.; five granddaughters, Candis B. Karpa and her husband, Stephen, of Seaford, Va., Deborah Doxey and her husband, John Taylor, of Merritt Island, Fla., Lorri Chapman and her husband, David, of Minneapolis, Minn., Wendy S. Paul and her husband, John, of Plattesville, and Barbara Iacarella and her husband, Gregory, of Minneapolis. Mrs. Powell had seven great-grandchildren, Alex Taylor and Shelley Taylor of Merritt Island, Jason Getgen and Adam Getgen of Plattesville, Stephen Karpa Jr. of Seaford, and Pascal Paul and Raymond Paul of Plattesville. In addition are cousins, nieces, nephews, and many friends who will miss her dearly.

A graveside service will be conducted by the Rev. Robert Merritt of First Christian Church (Disciples) at 2 p.m. Friday in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Friends are welcome to view the body from 9 a.m. Wednesday until noon Friday. Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel, is handling the arrangements. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
