A 29-year-old man was critically injured in a car crash early Wednesday when he lost control of his Subaru station wagon on Indian River Road near the Stumpy Lake area.
Police said alcohol was a factor in the crash that injured William J. Meyers of the 3600 block of Sandfiddler Road in Sandbridge.
Meyers was driving east on Indian River Road about 2:20 a.m. when his car ran off the road on a turn, police spokesman Mike Carey said. The station wagon struck a utility pole and a tree, pinning Meyers in the car.
Rescue crews freed him. He was taken to the trauma center at Virginia Beach General Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.
