The parole officer for Ivan Fitzherbert Lovell when the Kill Devil Hills resident allegedly murdered a Maryland State Trooper was fired on Wednesday, North Carolina Department of Correction officials said.
Parole Officer Michael Eric McKimmey, who lives in Manteo, was dismissed for ``grossly inefficient job performance,'' Division of Adult Probation and Parole Director Theodis Beck said.
``The department investigation found that McKimmey failed to properly report new criminal activity by Ault, including charges of assault with a deadly weapon in May 1995 and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon and second degree trespassing in September 1995,'' says a release prepared by the North Carolina Department of Correction. ``The officer also failed to properly follow up on the parolee's report of this criminal activity.''
State Correction Secretary Franklin Freeman said, ``We cannot tolerate employees who fail to do their job and put the public at risk.''
Lovell, 25, was on parole for drug violations Oct. 17 when he unlawfully left the state of North Carolina and drove up the Eastern Shore. When Maryland State Trooper Edward A. Plank pulled Lovell over for a speeding violation, Lovell allegedly shot the trooper in the face, killing him instantly. by CNB
