RICHARD A. BIHR

Retired U.S. Navy Capt. Richard A. Bihr died Nov. 21, 1995, in his home. He was 70 years old.

Born in Buffalo, N.Y., he began his Naval career in 1943, going to the V12 unit at Colgate University, followed by NROTC training at Rensselear Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y. In his Naval career of 32 years he saw duty in destroyers, cruisers and battleships. He commanded the destroyer USS Rogers during the Vietnam conflict, the destroyer tender USS Sierra and the Little Creek Amphibious Base, Norfolk.

Assignments ashore included training in communications engineering at Annapolis, Md., and he was awarded a masters degree in management from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif. Overseas duty from 1958 to 1962 was spent at SHAPE Headquarters outside of Paris, France. He retired Sept. 1, 1975, while assigned to the staff of the commander, U.S. Atlantic Fleet. Decorations awarded include the Meritorious Service Medal and the Navy Commendation Medal. After retirement from the Navy he worked for Planning Research Corporation as the project manager at the Norfolk office.

Capt. Bihr is survived by his wife, Grace; his daughter, Marilla Sargent; and grandchildren, Nichole and Richard Crist of Seattle, Wash.; his brothers, James E. Bihr of Whittier, Calif., Robert P. Bihr of Binghamton, N.Y.; and a sister, Patricia B. McCambridge of Warners, N.Y.

A memorial service will be held at All Saints Episcopal Church, Virginia Beach, on Tuesday at 10 a.m., followed later that day by an internment service at Christ Church, Matthews, Va., at 3 p.m.
