CAR-TRUCK CRASH ENDS NEWPORT NEWS CHASE

A police chase ended abruptly Thursday when the car police were pursuing rammed a pickup in an intersection.

About 12:20 p.m., a police officer was running radar in the Hilton area of the city when a 1995 Nissan Maxima came through at high speed.

The officer pulled out behind the vehicle. The Nissan stopped on Warwick Avenue just north of Main Street.

But as the officer walked up to the driver, the car shot down the road. The officer ran back to his cruiser and gave chase.

The car raced along Main Street at high speed and rammed the pickup truck at the intersection with Jefferson Ave. The driver of the speeding car jumped out and fled into a nearby housing area.

The impact totaled both vehicles. The driver of the truck was treated at the scene by paramedics and released with only minor injuries.

It was unclear if the driver who fled was hurt.

The suspect was spotted shortly after the crash, running along a drainage ditch at an apartment complex near Newmarket North Mall in Hampton.

But he remained at large Thursday night.
