DEEP CREEK'S DEON DYER IS TOP PLAYER JAMES BOYD OF INDIAN RIVER WAS CHOSEN THE DEFENSIVE MVP.

THERE WAS NO stopping Deep Creek running back Deon Dyer this year.

One of those players who gives his best efforts in the biggest games, Dyer paced the Hornets to their second straight undefeated regular season by leading the Southeastern District in rushing (1,289 yards) and scoring (22 TDs). For his performance, he earned Player of the Year honors on the 1995 All-Chesapeake football team, as selected by area coaches and the Clipper sports staff.

Dyer, who was one vote shy of being a unanimous pick for offensive MVP, rushed for over 100 yards six times this season and scored at least one touchdown in every game.

Indian River quarterback/defensive back James Boyd was voted the defensive MVP for Chesapeake.

The Braves, Deep Creek and Western Branch all had four members on the first-team offense. On defense, the Hornets led with five selections, followed by Western Branch with four and Indian River with two.

Oscar Smith, which had no players on the first team last year, placed Ken McCants and William Fuller on the first-team defense and running back Kelvin Bethea on the offense.

Only three players, all seniors, made return appearances on the first team offense - Dyer, Western Branch's Shyrone Stith (running back), and Deep Creek's Joe Verdi (kicker). Western Branch's Malik Cook (linebacker), Deep Creek's George Miller (linebacker), and Boyd were the repeaters on defense.

Three of the Bruins defensive selections moved up from 1994's second team - end Mark Edmonson, lineman Jason Hess, and defensive back Lorenzo Ferguson.

Oscar Smith's Fuller also graduated to the first team, along with Indian River center Mike Toliver.

Kick returner Adrian Hughes was Great Bridge's only representative on the first team. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
