Stanley Redfern Purcell Sr., 82, of the 1600 block of Albright Court, died Nov. 24, 1995.
Mr. Purcell was born in Squantum, Mass., in 1913. He has been a resident of Virginia Beach for the past 17 years. He previously resided in Stamford, Conn., and also in Mountainside, N.J. Mr. Purcell graduated from Harvard University in 1935 with a degree in chemistry. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Chemical Corps., and also in the Army Reserves as a lieutenant colonel. Mr. Purcell was employed with the American Home Products, Standard Brands, and Snap-On-Tools. He retired 17 years ago.
Mr. Purcell was preceded in death by his former wife, Elizabeth Voorhis Purcell, in 1985. He is survived by his current wife, Anne Purcell, of Virginia Beach; a son Stanley R. Purcell Jr. of Red Bank, N.J.; a daughter, Elizabeth Purcell Powers of Allentown, Pa.; two sisters, Phyllis Gray of Rangley, Maine, and Sylvia Perry of Westfield, N.J.; and five grandchildren.
A funeral service will be conducted Monday at 3:30 p.m. in Eastern Shore Episcopal Church, 2020 Laskin Road, Virginia Beach, by the Rev. Andrew McBeth. Burial will be at a later date in Hackensack, N.J. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel, is handling arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Eastern Shore Episcopal Church, Attn: Reverend Andrew McBeth.
