WHAT ISLAM STANDS FOR

Bethanie Ward seemingly reads one book written by one woman about life in her particular society and culture and forms an opinion about the entire Islamic world (letter, Oct. 31).

How should I, and the rest of the world, form an opinion about Ms. Ward's life? Should we judge the morals of the society in which she lives and the religion which she practices based on the numerous stories of sexual abuse, domestic violence, promiscuity and decadence portrayed daily in newspapers, books, movies and on talk shows?

Islam does not preach or condone oppression or violence. It teaches us respect for all members of society, especially women (``Men shall take full care of women'' - the Koran). When people choose to ignore this teaching, they do so as a matter of personal choice, not because of their religious preference.
