A fire of undetermined origin chased four families from a Regency Street apartment complex late Sunday morning.
No injuries were reported.
Firefighters had controlled the fire before it spread beyond the kitchen and bedroom areas of one unit in the Merrimac Apartments, said Fire Capt. Jeff Pereira.
Residents of the apartment complex called the fire department about 11:30 a.m., complaining that they smelled smoke, Pereira said.
Firefighters at first saw no flames, but they smelled smoke and traced it to a crawl space under one apartment.
By the time the source was located, flames had worked their way up the wooden studs into the upper floor.
Fire investigators are probing the suspicious origin of the blaze.
