SCHOOL NOTES

ENDOWMENT FUND: The Isle of Wight Academy Audrey D. Carr Endowment Fund has been established in honor of an educator who served in the county for 27 years.

The fund is intended to contribute to the academy's long-term stability, sustain educational programs and support future programs, according to a news release.

Carr, who died in September, served as a mathematics teacher in the Isle of Wight County and Nansemond County school systems for 19 years and then as a mathematics teacher, administrator and elementary coordinator at the academy for eight years. She also served as chairman of the academy's long-range planning committee.

``One of those long-range plans was to establish an endowment fund for the school,'' said Headmaster Benjamin A. Vaughan. ``When Mrs. Carr died in September, she left a life insurance policy that named the school as beneficiary.''

ACADEMIC CHALLENGE: The Smithfield High School Varsity and Junior Varsity Academic Challenge Teams have completed successful seasons.

The varsity team, coached by Jean Piland, has qualified for district finals. Team members are Deidre Harrington, Carrie Phibbs, Kari Miller, Sarah Sarver, Courtney Christie, Andrea Carson, Neil Parrish, Tommy Routten, Steve Riddick and Josh Stone.

The junior varsity team, which placed second in the Bay Rivers District, had 11 wins and three losses. Team members are Gregory Bew, Tanishia Epps, Lauren Fletcher, Chris Fortier, Matt Hanson, Audrey Harrington, Kristen Marios, Emily Sarver and Justin Hornback.

HARVEST FESTIVAL: The annual fund-raiser for Isle of Wight Academy was held Oct. 28 at the school. Each year the event raises about $15,000 to help buy school equipment and classroom supplies.

This year's Harvest Queen was Melinda Winegar, 5, of Isle of Wight, daughter of Jerry and Sharon Stallings. Harvest King was Charles Jones, 9, of Smithfield, son of David and Michele Jones. by CNB
