4 WITH BEACH TIES VOTED ONTO TOP TEAM THE NO. 1 PICK FOR HONORS WAS GABE VALENCIA, WHO PLAYS FOR NANSEMOND-SUFFOLK ACADEMY.

SEAN LUOMA of Cape Henry, Virginia Beach resident Trey Cooper of Norfolk Collegiate and Dave Walker and Barrie Chang of Norfolk Academy have been voted to the All-Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools first team in soccer.

The 6-foot-4, 180-pound Luoma, a senior, scored five goals and had six assists this fall.

``Sean's the guy we looked to get the ball to every time,'' said Cape Henry coach Ed Faubert. ``That's because good things always happen when he gets the ball.''

Cooper, the conference's second leading scorer during the regular season, scored 21 goals and added 15 assists. Cooper's seven points in the conference tournament gave him a single-season total of 64 and a career mark of 121, both records at Norfolk Collegiate.

Walker and Chang anchored the Norfolk Academy defense. Chang had 38 saves and recorded four shutouts in the regular season for the Bulldogs.

The first team's leading vote-getter was Nansemond-Suffolk Academy's Gabe Valencia, who played an important role in Nansemond-Suffolk's major improvement over last year.

``The most I brought was some confidence,'' said Valencia, who is a member of the Richmond Capitals, an under-18 club soccer team. ``That's all they needed to get turned around. These guys can play - they just needed it brought out.''

The Saints, who won just one TCIS game last season, finished 6-2 in the conference this season and lost in the tournament championship 3-1 to Hampton Roads.

``The spark of confidence that Gabe gave them was something that they haven't had,'' first-year N-SA coach Tom Gill said. ``They looked up to him and he just took over. It spread through the whole team.''

Other first team selections were: Griff Behncke and Campbell Delk of Hampton Roads; Kory Juul of Walsingham; Arthur Kelly of Peninsula Catholic and Bobby Mitchell of Norfolk Collegiate.

Players selected to the all-conference second team included: Joe Marconyak and Coy Davis of Catholic; Dennis Berndt of Norfolk Collegiate; Jon Lampton of Norfolk Academy; Brian Luoma of Cape Henry; and Ben Goins, Jay Habel and Jonathan Duman of Nansemond-Suffolk.

Catholic's Matt Ellinwood, Norfolk Christian's Matt Jones, Norfolk Collegiate's William Karangelen and Noah Stockton, and N-SA's Bryan Sharp received honorable mention. ILLUSTRATION: TIDEWATER CONFERNECE OF INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS SOCCER
