HAMPTON ROADS TREASURES

The Virginia Foundation for the Humanities recently held its fall board meeting in Norfolk, in keeping with its commitment to support the humanities throughout the commonwealth.

I am especially grateful to Norfolk Southern Corp. and Crestar Bank, co-sponsors of a reception and dinner for our local guests, and to Nauticus and the Hampton Roads Naval Museum, which hosted the event.

The evening was particularly special because we had the great pleasure of honoring Tommy L. Bogger Jr., dean of Library Services and Special Collections at Norfolk State University, and Joy Hakim of Virginia Beach, author of the 10-volume A History of US, for their distinguished contributions to the humanities and public policy.

We were delighted to be able to introduce many of our board, staff and guests to the treasures in the Hampton Roads Naval Museum at Nauticus; my 10-year-old son and I had already enjoyed an entertaining and educational visit to Nauticus in August. With the Naval Museum and Nauticus, Norfolk clearly offers a valuable resource for its residents and a unique reason for tourists to visit. We appreciated our warm welcome to Hampton Roads.
