MELVIN M. MOUBERRY

Melvin May Mouberry, 64, of the 1400 block of Whittier Road, died in a local hospital on Nov. 26, 1995.

Mr. Mouberry was born in Orange County, Va. He was a U.S. Army Special Forces command sergeant major. Command Sgt. Maj. Mouberry started his Army career with the 17th Airborne Division at Camp Pickett, Va. After World War II he served in Japan with the occupation forces and departed with the first American combat unit to Korea in 1950. Upon returning to the states he served with the XVIII Airborne Corps, and then he went to Europe to serve with U.S. Army Europe. Returning to Korea in 1960, he served with the 7th Infantry Division, the same year he was sent to Vietnam with the MAAG. Upon returning to the states he joined Special Forces and returned to Vietnam, where he served several tours (approximately 10 years) through June 1971. At this time he was sent to the U.S. Army Element of the Commander in Chief Atlantic.

Among his decorations are the Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart Medal with Oak Leaf Clusters, Good Conduct Medal with knots, Combat Infantry Badge 2nd Award, Master Parachutist Badge, Thai Master Parachutist Badge with Fourragere, Vietnamese Parachutist Badge.

He served in the following units over the 24-year period with the U.S. Army: 17th ABN DIV, 14th Regt Team, 1st Cav Div, 24th Inf Div, 1st Ranger Co, GHQ FECOM, XVIII ABN CORPS, 62 MP CO, 725 MP BN, 82nd ABN DIV, 61st MP CO, 2nd INF DIV, 7th INF DIV, 5, 6, 7th Special Forces GP, 46 SF CO, CINCLANT.

He was also the owner and operator of Mouberry Trucking. He was a Protestant. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a member of Non-commissioned Officers Association.

Survivors include one daughter, Joyce Mouberry Blevins of Pulaski, Va.; three sons, Arthur Mouberry of Fuquay-Varina, N.C., David May Mouberry of Sanford, N.C., and Melvin Ray Mouberry of Cameron, N.C.; two sisters, Katherine Mouberry Shifflett of Rochelle, Va., and Memorie Mouberry Williams of Barboursville, Va.; four brothers, Haywood Mouberry, Zirkle Randolph Mouberry and Larry Junior Mouberry all of Barboursville, and Cubie Lee Mouberry of Orange, Va.; and 17 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, Douglas Wayne Mouberry and Raymond Lewis Mouberry, both formerly of Cameron.

A graveside service will be held Thursday, Nov. 30, 1995, at 2 p.m. in Standardsville Cemetery, Standardsville, Va. Friends may join the family at Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel, for visitation 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. today. Friends may also join the family at Ryan-Estes Funeral Home, Route 33, Quinque, Va., for visitation Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the Paralyzed Veterans of America, Wilton, N.H. 03086 or to the charity of your choice.
