VIRGINIA SPEED LIMITS EXPECTED TO REMAIN THE SAME, OFFICIAL SAYS

Virginia transportation officials said Tuesday that no changes are planned for the state speed limit after the end of the national 55-mph speed limit.

``We really, at this point, don't anticipate any changes in Virginia's speed limit,'' said Shirley J. Ybarra, Virginia's deputy secretary of transportation.

``We agree with having the flexibility for the states. However, we don't foresee any changes in Virginia.''

The commonwealth currently limits speeds to 55 mph in urban and 65 mph in rural areas. Ybarra said the state has been satisfied with the current speed limits. ``It seems to be working well and we've really had no big pressures to make any changes.''
