At first the man appeared to be legitimate. He talked like a Norfolk police officer, he carried a walkie-talkie and he flashed a police badge.
But after the husband of a would-be extortion victim eyeballed the badge, a police spokesman said, he realized the man was a fake and called the real police.
Larry Hill, the police department spokesman, said the suspect was identified as Marcus E. Adams Jr. Hill said Adams tried to extort money from a Norfolk woman last week at her home in the 5600 block of Granby Street.
Hill reported the alleged impostor knocked on the front door of the house at 12:40 p.m. He identified himself as an officer to the woman and then ``advised her he had a warrant for the woman at that address but could take care of the warrant if she gave him a money order for $163,'' Hill said Tuesday.
Adams told the woman if she did not pay she would go to jail, Hill said. But the woman's husband took a closer look at the badge Adams flashed and could tell it was a phony, Hill said. Adams fled, and the police were called.
Police investigators arrested Adams, 27, of the 7400 block of Fenner St. He was charged with impersonating a police officer, burglary and attempted extortion. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
