SPECKLED TROUT, STRIPERS LED A GOOD DAY OF FISHING

Speckled trout fishing was good in the surf at numerous locations Tuesday. The bulk of the fish were landed on soft plastic artificial lures and Mirrolures.

Catches were reported from behind the Holiday Inn and along the beach near Helga Street in Kill Devil Hills during the morning. A good run developed later in the day south of Nags Head Fishing Pier.

Scattered striped bass also were landed along the beach by trout fishermen and anglers using fresh cut bait.

A few trout and striped bass were landed by beach fishermen from a number of sloughs in the Oregon Inlet areas. Trolling for stripers was fairly good on the bar east of the Bonner Bridge during the morning.

Good catches of speckled trout were landed by surfcasters along the beach from Rodanthe to Buxton. Some stripers also were taken by anglers using cut bait.

Nice-sized speckled trout were taken at Cape Point along the north beach near the Cape Hatteras lighthouse.

Fishing was slow in the Frisco area because of gusty southwest winds and dirty water.

Ocean piers south of Oregon Inlet on Hatteras Island have closed for the season. Kitty Hawk and Avalon Piers also have closed, but Nags Head, Jennette's and Outer Banks Piers will remain open for a while longer.

Several puppy drum, speckled trout and a 16-inch gray trout were landed on Nags Head Pier.

Jennette's Pier reported some small flounder and speckled trout.

Anglers on Outer Banks Pier caught plenty of small sea mullet, several puppy drum, flounder and black drum.

Boats from Oregon Inlet, Pirates Cove and Hatteras remained at the dock Tuesday. Blue water action, both commercial and recreational, should resume later this week.

Striper action should improve with the arrival of the next cold front.

The water temperature at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck was 53 degrees Tuesday. by CNB
