HALF OF DREAM TEAM COMES FROM CATHOLIC HIGH NORFOLK CHRISTIAN, NORFOLK COLLEGIATE AND WALSINGHAM EACH POSTED A PLAYER.

TIDEWATER Conference of Independent Schools boys volleyball champion Catholic placed three of its players on the six-player postseason all-star team.

Mike Sachon, a senior setter, was the league's top vote getter and earned the honorary captain award.

According to Norfolk Christian coach Nancy Rooks, whose team's only loss was to the Crusaders, Sachon was the player most teams respected.

``He's an excellent player,'' Rooks said. ``I'm sure they ran their offense around him when he was on the front line. He's a very versatile player.

``And very coachable, I'm sure. He had a great attitude.''

Sachon has been playing volleyball for three seasons and has two years of junior Olympic experience under his belt. This weekend, Sachon, who is also on the Catholic swim team, will try out for his third junior Olympic volleyball squad.

Joining Sachon on the first team were Catholic's Chris de Leon and Jeff Alberts; Norfolk Christian's David Carter; Norfolk Collegiate's Bryan Jackson and Walsingham's Aaron Brumfield.

Carter, a 6-foot-2 senior setter, was the heart of the Ambassadors' offense. He scored 117 points with a 91 percent serving average and had 17 aces. Carter had 82 kills on the year, good for over six a match and had 23 blocks.

``He's a very impressive player,'' Rooks said. ``He made the game more exciting for the spectators. People would come to the home games just to watch him make kills.

``He's very intense and focused on the court. He has good court sense and is a leader.''

Jackson was one of only two players on Norfolk Collegiate's fourth-place finishing team that had three years of varsity experience. Jackson led the team with four blocks, three kills and was 70 percent from the service line.

``He was our No. 1 blocker and setter,'' Norfolk Collegiate coach Tara Voke said of her team's most valuable player. ``We basically built the team around him.''

Named to the second team were Greenbrier Christian's Justin Bush; Nansemond-Suffolk Academy's John Dragseth and Ross Morgan; Norfolk Christian senior setter Clark Taylor and senior outside hitter Will Jenkins; and Norfolk Collegiate sophomore middle hitter Chris Moring and senior outside hitter Jesse Gordon.

Earning honorable mention were Norfolk Christian's Tim Morton; Walsingham's Steve Sibers and Jesse Wilburn; Greenbrier Christian's James Thomas and Nansemond-Suffolk's Andrew Garrett. ILLUSTRATION: Photos
