STRIKE UP THE BAND

At a time when many of us are worried about our jobs and the distressing and depressing status of our national budget, how fortunate we were to be part of the large audience at a wonderful free concert Nov. 19 at Kempsville High School in Virginia Beach.

The recently formed Dominion Brass Band, a local group of very talented musicians, entertained us with their music and their humor. Not only did their enthusiastic members perform beautifully, but they also went above and beyond the call of duty by providing a much longer program than they had been planning.

The U.S. Army Band had been scheduled to perform at this concert but had to cancel because of the budget squabble in Washington. With no notice, the Dominion Brass Band called on its members to rehearse additional numbers so that they could provide an entire concert program rather than just a part of one.

I am grateful to the members of the Dominion Brass Band for being such good sports, for sharing their talents with us, for lifting our spirits and for reminding us that there are still many things for which we can be thankful.

Lucky for us in the area, the band will perform again on Dec. 1 at 7:30 p.m. at Freemason Street Baptist Church in Norfolk.
