The Virginian-Pilot has offered a voluntary-severance incentive to 29 of its 230 full-time production employees. The newspaper said it is offering the incentive because technological advances have made it possible to produce the newspaper with fewer people.
The offer, effective Wednesday, is for full-time production employees with 30 or more years of continuous full-time service. Eligible employees with 40 or more years would receive a severance of two times their annual salary; those with at least 30 but less than 40 years would receive 1 1/2 times their annual salary.
The offer is available only to production employees because that department is affected most by technological changes in producing and distributing the newspaper, said R. Bruce Bradley, The Virginian-Pilot's president and publisher. by CNB
