A 40-year-old Wanchese man who allegedly assaulted his wife and then stuffed her in the trunk of his car has been charged with kidnapping and intent to kill.
Milton Riley was arrested by Currituck County authorities Tuesday afternoon after he was spotted driving on a flat tire near a beach access area.
A deputy stopped the car to offer assistance, and Sarah Riley jumped from the front seat of the car and asked for help.
Sarah Riley was treated at North Beach Medical Center in Southern Shores for injuries to her head, neck and arms.
She was later transferred to Albemarle Hospital, where she was released late Tuesday.
Her husband has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, inflicting serious injury and second-degree kidnapping.
Police allege that at 10:45 a.m. Tuesday, Riley beat his wife with his fists, then tied her up and put her in the trunk of his car.
Dare County Sheriff A.L. ``Bert'' Austin said the case is under investigation. It was not known when Sarah Riley was taken out of the trunk.
Milton Riley is in custody at the Dare County Detention Center on $20,000 secured bond. He is scheduled to make his first appearance in Dare County District Court Friday morning.
