Keith Monroe has been named editorial page editor of The Virginian-Pilot, effective Monday.
Monroe, 48, joined the Pilot in March 1994, working as an editorial writer and staff writer. In 1994, the Virginia Press Association awarded Monroe first place in its editorial-writing contest.
``I am confident Keith will continue to advance our editorial page as the place Hampton Roads readers go for thought-provoking analysis,'' Publisher R. Bruce Bradley said Thursday in announcing Monroe's promotion.
Monroe will report to Bradley and will serve on the newspaper's leadership team.
Monroe said the editorial page will take a moderate stance on most issues and a conservative stance on fiscal issues. He said the page will offer a forum for debate among people with alternative views.
``A first-rate editorial page ought to be sounding public opinion all the time, publishing polls, asking for feedback on important topics, leading the discussion, taking strong stands and welcoming vigorous dissent,'' he said. ``The editorial page should crusade for reform where needed, consciously as part of its annual mission.''
From 1987 to 1994, Monroe was an editorial writer and columnist at the Winston-Salem Journal, where his work in column writing, criticism and editorial writing won awards from the North Carolina Press Association.
Monroe directed the Journal's marketing services department from 1984 to 1987. He also has owned an advertising agency in North Carolina and taught rhetoric at Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland and at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
A graduate of Baldwin-Wallace College in Ohio, he has a master of fine arts degree and a doctorate in English from UNC-G.
Monroe lives in the Alanton section of Virginia Beach with his wife, Deborah, their 11-year-old daughter, Nell, and his father, Hayden Monroe.
He succeeds John Barnes as editorial page editor. Barnes left the paper in November 1994. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
