CLEAR WATER BROUGHT CLEARLY BETTER FISHING OFF BEACHES

Improved water clarity along Outer Banks beaches resulted in good speckled trout action at various locations Friday morning.

Catches of citation speckled trout were reported from the north side of Oregon Inlet across from the Bodie Island lighthouse, along the beach south of Rodanthe Pier and in sloughs south of Ramp 23. A few fish were landed in the Helga Street area in Kill Devil Hills.

Good numbers of 2-to-3-pound speckled trout were beached at Cape Point early in the day near the lighthouse, and also between Ramp 38 and Buxton.

Fishing was slow along the south beach of Hatteras Island because of strong southwest winds.

Anglers trolling around the Oregon Inlet bar caught limits of keeper stripers on bucktails before 9 a.m.

Pier fishing along the northern beaches was slow on Nags Head Pier and Jennette's Pier, but Outer Banks Pier reported early morning action consisting of a couple of striped bass and a dozen speckled trout. The trout were landed on Fin-S lures.

Oregon Inlet and Pirates Cove charters caught plenty of yellowfin tuna and a few wahoo north of ``the point,'' southeast of Oregon Inlet, around the 40640 Loran line. Most of the tuna were small with the exception of a couple of 50-pounders.

King mackerel action off Hatteras was excellent around and behind the wrecks. Most of the fish were taken on live bait, and exceeded the minimum weight of 30 pounds to qualify for a state citation.
