LETTERS TO THE EDITOR - CAROLINA COAST

Thanks to Sen. Basnight

The Currituck County Schools are indebted, once again, to Sen. Marc Basnight for his efforts on behalf of our public schools.

Owing to the intercession of Sen. Basnight, the Commission on School Facility Needs awarded $5.2 million in state funds to address our critical facility needs.

Sen. Basnight's assistance became necessary when it appeared some of the newly appointed commission members might abandon the selection criteria that had been in place since 1988.

During the past six months, Sen. Basnight's efforts on our behalf for small schools funding, critical needs funding and transportation funds have resulted in revenues to Currituck County that will cumulatively total about $10 million.

Given the rapid growth of Currituck County and the overwhelming demands for public services, these funds will ensure our young people are provided the necessary instructional resources and facilities they need.

Our sincere thanks to Sen. Basnight for his persistence and perseverance on behalf of the citizens and students in Currituck County.

We are most grateful for his service to our county and the northeast region.

Currituck County Board of Education Husband's life spared

We have been residents of the Outer Banks for nearly seven years and have often heard that older people are reluctant to settle here because there is no hospital nearby.

We have recently had a life-threatening experience that put this concept to the test.

On Nov. 11, my husband suffered a heart attack while home alone. Fortunately, he was able to call 911.

The prompt response and emergency care given by the EMTs was critical, as were the lifesaving procedures administered at the Outer Banks Medical Center.

Their efforts to stabilize his condition before transporting him on that stormy night were in great part due to the administering of T-PA (clot-buster) by Dr. Mitchell Jenkins.

This, I learned later, was most critical in saving my husband's life.

My husband ended up in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where he underwent successful balloon angioplasty.

He is home now recuperating very nicely.

We certainly felt God's presence every step of the way and give him all praise and thanks.

We also give thanks for the EMTs and professionals like Dr. Jenkins.
