VIOLENCE CONDONED?

Regarding Faiqa Qureshi's letter (Nov. 8): She says, ``Islam does not preach or condone oppression or violence.'' She then quotes a line from the Koran.

I quote another passage from the Koran: ``Men have authority over women, because God made the one superior to the other, and because men spend their wealth to maintain them. Good women are obedient . . . as for those from whom you fear disobedience, admonish them and send them to beds apart, and beat them (Koran, 4:34).''

This seems to me to condone oppression and violence quite clearly.
