SOCIAL MINISTRY TO CELEBRATE ANNIVERSARY

The 25th anniversary of the OASIS Social Ministry will be celebrated with an open house from 2 to 4 p.m. Dec. 10.

The ministry is located at 1020 High St., and admission to the open house will be one can of food.

OASIS ministry was started in 1970 by the St. Paul's Action Group, a group of individuals dedicated to doing something about poverty and the people victimized by it.

Today, the ministry draws support from individuals and churches of all denominations.

It works in conjunction with other organizations like the Portsmouth Area Resources Coalition and also provides blankets and food for the homeless through churches, said Evelyn Screeny, OASIS director.

In addition, the ministry provides to people in need help with utilities, rent, food, clothes and referrals.

That's in addition to the thrift shop, a soup kitchen and a food pantry that the organization maintains.

OASIS also matches needy families with those who want to give food or gifts during the holidays. The food and gift baskets are distributed at the ministry just before Christmas.

The ministry is now in need of volunteers for jobs like sorting and sales at the Thrift Shop or to work in the soup kitchen.
