Harold Barnes never thought becoming the business manager of a Pop Warner Midget football team would take him places. But this year it has.
Barnes' team, the Bennett's Creek Warriors, will play in the Pop Warner Super Bowl, a four-team national tournament in Florida, Dec. 5-10. The Warriors became the first team from Southeastern Virginia to earn a berth in a Pop Warner Super Bowl game by winning playoff games in Cary, N.C., and Columbia Tenn.
``Absolutely not,'' Barnes said when asked if he thought he'd be doing a lot of traveling with a team of 12- to 15-year-olds. ``The furthest trip we thought we'd have was one playoff game. But these guys are good.''
The Warriors, all from Suffolk, went 8-0 during the regular season and didn't allow a point. They became the first Suffolk Pop Warner team to win a playoff game when they beat a team from Raleigh 21-18 Nov. 9.
The Warriors will face a Dansbury, Conn., team at the Silver Spur Stadium in Kissimmee, Fla., in the first round. The winner will play for the championship Dec. 9 at 11 a.m. at Cypress Creek High School Stadium.
The Warriors will take a bus, which leaves Monday at midnight.
Barnes said the trip will cost about $13,000 and anyone wishing to make a tax-deductible donation can call him at 623-5375. by CNB
