STRIPERS, SPECKS ARE BENDING THE RODS

Striped bass in Virginia waters and speckled trout along the North Carolina Outer Banks provided most of the area's angling action in recent days.

Several big stripers were boated or released along the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, where the heaviest reported fish was a 41 3/4-pounder claimed by Bill Wild of Virginia Beach, fishing on the boat Lady Jane II.

George H. Orange Jr. of Virginia Beach had a striper that weighed either 40 pounds, 38 1/2 pounds or 39.35 pounds, depending on which scale you want to believe.

The striper was weighed at Lynnhaven Waterways Marina, where it met the 40-pound minimum for a citation award from the Virginia Salt Water Fishing Tournament.

But on a scale used for a tournament staged by the Virginia Beach Anglers Club, it went 39.35 pounds. And on yet another scale used for a tournament by the Tidewater Anglers Club, it went 39-8.

Regardless, it was a big fish.

The heaviest reported Outer Banks speck was a 7 1/2-pounder pulled from the surf at Oregon Inlet by Richard Starrette of Currituck, N.C.

A big striper also topped recent freshwater catches. Boated at Western Branch Reservoir in Suffolk by Lyle Schmidtka of Chesapeake, it weighed 27 3/4 pounds.
