Two vehicles collided in the 2000 block of Elbow Road Monday morning, injuring both drivers and shutting down the road for several hours.
The accident occurred just before 7 a.m. when the driver of a service truck traveling west apparently lost control, said police spokeswoman Elizabeth Jones. When he tried to regain control, he collided head-on with a Jeep Cherokee traveling east.
The truck driver, Tyrone Valentine, of the 3300 block of Woodburne Drive in Virginia Beach, had minor injuries and was taken to a hospital.
The driver of the Jeep was identified as Carla Wolfe of the 900 block of Weeping Willow Drive. She suffered serious injuries and was flown to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
Several barrels of oil, carried by the service truck, spilled during the crash, Jones said. A Fire Department hazardous-materials team was called in to clean the spill. The road reopened at 1:30 p.m.
