NO. 4 G. BRIDGE AVOIDS UPSET WITH LATE BUCKET

Deep Creek's box-and-one defense on Great Bridge guard Lashelle Griffin worked for all but three seconds of the second half.

Griffin, who scored 14 first-half points but had been held scoreless in the second, made an off-balance layup with 3.2 seconds left to give the No. 4 Wildcats a 54-53 victory over the Hornets in a Southeastern District girls basketball matchup Tuesday.

``I didn't know where I was when I got the ball,'' Griffin said. ``I didn't know how close I was.''

Great Bridge (2-0 overall, 1-0 Southeastern) held the lead for three quarters before Deep Creek's defensive switch frustrated the offense and broke down the Wildcats' transition game.

The Hornets (1-1, 0-1) then outscored Great Bridge 9-0 for a 47-46 lead.

But Courtney Simons came off the bench and hit two 3-pointers to put the Wildcats back into the lead.

``I didn't recognize how close the game was when I took the shots,'' said Simons, who finished with 13 points. ``I wasn't even thinking about it.''

Deep Creek's Anecia Braithwaite gave her something to think about with 19 seconds to play when her layup put the Hornets back up, 53-52.

But Simons found Griffin underneath the basket for what proved to be the game winner.

Alicia Braithwaite led Deep Creek with a game-high 22 points and Stacie Watson chipped in 14 points and 11 rebounds. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
