HOCKEY COVERAGE ISN'T ADMIRABLE

It seems to be an annual ritual - someone like me writes to decry the lack of top-drawer coverage of the Hampton Roads Admirals. I am bewildered that North Carolina teams, out-of-state baseball, football and basketball teams and, for goodness sake, even the Cleveland Browns get more ink than our own professional hockey team. And why do the last-place Washington Redskins take precedence over the almost-in-first-place Admirals?

Some feel we deserve a major-league professional team. Others say we may not have the fan support. Your coverage of our existing professional teams may be part of the problem. New fans frequently attend sports events because the games are depicted in front-page sports-section location.

Get with it, guys. We are fortunate to have a professional hockey program which reaches kids and grandparents alike. Give these young players the coverage they have earned. Use our newspaper to introduce new fans to the game of hockey and the world of the Hampton Roads Admirals.
