A teenage murder suspect, released on a technicality in October, then re-indicted for capital murder Wednesday, failed to show up in court Thursday morning but was expected to turn himself in Thursday night.
The suspect, Chauncey Jackson, 16, is accused of killing a man in Diggs Town last year. He was not home home Wednesday when police tried to arrest him and he did not show up for a bond hearing in court Thursday morning.
Jackson is accused of shooting Ronald G. Bonney Jr., 27, on Aug. 31, 1994. Prosecutors say he has confessed to police. A co-defendant, Calvin Outlaw, has been convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to 68 years in prison.
Jackson was charged originally as a juvenile. His case was transferred from Juvenile Court in September 1994, then he was indicted as an adult in Circuit Court the following month.
But a Circuit Court judge did not review the juvenile transfer before prosecutors presented the charges to the grand jury, as required by a new state law.
As a result of this procedural error, Judge Lydia Taylor released Jackson two months ago on a $20,000 personal recognizance bond. She later ruled that prosecutors must re-indict Jackson if they want to try him for murder.
On Wednesday morning, a grand jury indicted Jackson on the same charges of capital murder. That afternoon, police went to arrest Jackson at his grandparents' home, but he was not there. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
