Mike Sheppard, executive director of the Dalkon Shield Claimants Trust in Richmond, said about $800 million in bonus checks to claimants were placed in the mail Thursday. Crestar Bank, the Trust's financial custodian, processed over 47,000 checks for delivery to claimants residing in the United States and in more than 50 foreign countries. Lawyers are prohibited from deducting more than 10 percent from the bonuses paid to claimants. This bonus payment still leaves more than $600 million in funds to pay about 5,000 remaining claims, and for later bonus distribution.
