NORFOLK CHRISTIAN RALLIES, OUTLASTS CATHOLIC 66-59

Matt Jones scored 25 points and Norfolk Christian came from behind to beat visiting Catholic, 66-59, in a boys basketball game Thursday.

Trailing by one after three quarters, the Crusaders grabbed the lead early in the fourth, relying mainly on a 1-3-1 defense.

But Jones broke down the Catholic zone by penetrating and drawing fouls as the Ambassadors (2-4) bounced back. As a result, Jones scored seven points in the quarter and converted 8 of 11 free throws in the second half. For the game, Christian connected on 22 of 31 (71 percent) at the line.

Kevin Ryan contributed two key steals in the closing minutes and Ben Doyle hit 3-pointer that gave the Amassadors a five-point cushion with a minute to go.

Ryan finished with 16 points and eight rebounds and Doyle ha eight points and eight rebounds.

Ryan Andrews scored 17 points and Anthony Hawthorne added 10 for Catholic.

In another boys game:

Greenbrier Christian 84, Alliance Christian 34: Heath Burris scored 11 of his 21 points in the second quarter as the Gators (4-1) built a 21-point halftime lead, then turned up the defensive pressure in the third quarter. Scott Sherwood and Justin Bush added 12 points each and Anthony Gammage and Nick Huneycutt scored 10 each. Kevin Compton had 10 points and Charlie Parker grabbed 10 rebounds for the Falcons (1-4).

In girls volleyball:

Lakeland 2, Southampton 0: Kristy Cornett served 12 consecutive points in the second game as the Cavaliers (2-0) swept, 15-8, 15-10. Jennifer Craig made five kills and Ana Ferreira, a Brazilian exchange student, served 10 points for Lakeland.

Atlantic Shores 3, Nansemond-Suffolk 1: The Seahawks won, 15-8, 8-15, 15-9, 15-13. by CNB
